Brick Replacement Service is a 1×1 metre hand powered ‘factory’ producing ‘Reseeding Bricks’; a replacement brick for replenishing plant life and growth in the city that normally gets cleared away. The bricks are made up of a compressed soil clay mix with a binder, and contain a multitude of herb, grass and wild flower seeds. Packed into the same dimensions as London stock, they can be placed in holes in walls or built into entirely new structures, blooming into pocket meadows in the city over time. We worked closely with Henry Lawrence on the concept development, design and build.
Originally conceived for Dezeen Space at the 2011 London Design Festival, the factory also featured at 2011 Designers Block, 2012 Interiors UK, Architecture for Humanity’s ‘Ideas on a Postcard‘ and selected as one of Kevin McCloud’s Green Heroes as part of 2011 Grand Designs Live.
